Our Approach: Data Science Meets Human-Centered Care
The CHOICE project brings together clinical knowledge and data science to better support women with BRCA mutations. The goal is to connect complex medical information with real-life decision-making. We use a mix of methods, including qualitative approaches such as in-depth interviews and international surveys, alongside AI-based analysis. This combination allows us to move beyond general recommendations and better understand how women experience their decision process.
Making sense of information overload and misinformation
In an era of information overload, clarity is our priority. Innovation in CHOICE begins with the large-scale analysis of over 5,000,000 online interactions across social media and health forums. Using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs), we identify prevalent misconceptions and areas of patient anxiety in real-time. This allows us to build a Multilingual Health Literacy Dictionary that translates complex medical terminology into clear, culturally sensitive language tailored for audiences in Portugal, Czechia, and Greece.
CHOICE Tools: The Health Literacy Algorithm & API
We are developing a first-of-its-kind Health Literacy Algorithm designed to classify and analyze BRCA-related content into actionable themes like prevention, emotional support, and treatment options. This innovation is made accessible through a ready-to-use API that can be integrated directly into national healthcare platforms. This allows hospital websites and health apps to provide real-time, data-driven feedback, helping providers adjust their communication strategies to meet the immediate emotional and informational needs of their patients.
CHOICE Interactive Simulations & Virtual Patients
To transform the way patients and providers interact, CHOICE introduces “Virtual Patients”, interactive computer simulations that allow users to navigate real-life medical scenarios in a safe, game-like environment. Alongside these simulations, our interactive Decision Trees help women visualize the long-term impacts of their choices, from surveillance to risk-reducing surgeries. By empowering healthcare professionals with these tools, we ensure that every clinical conversation is grounded in empathy, clarity, and the latest evidence-based data.
