Breast cancer remains a significant global public health challenge, particularly among women carrying BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Every year, approximately 375,100 new cases are diagnosed in the EU and 557,500 in Europe, with a considerable portion involving BRCA carriers. Mutations in these genes disrupt DNA repair, leading to homologous recombination deficiency (HRD), genomic instability, and increased tumour risk. With around 228.4 million women in the EU, an estimated 285,500 to 571,000 may carry harmful BRCA mutations, facing lifetime breast cancer risks of up to 72% (BRCA1) and 69% (BRCA2), compared to 9–13% in the general population. Despite this, many women remain undetected until diagnosis, with BRCA-related cancers often showing more aggressive characteristics such as TNBC, higher tumor grades, and recurrence.
Early identification is crucial, enabling preventive measures like enhanced screening, risk-reducing surgeries, or chemoprevention. Yet, uptake of these strategies remains low due to lack of awareness, misconceptions, fear, and challenges in health communication.
The CHOICE Project (Comprehensive Health Options and Information for Cancer Education) addresses these gaps by enhancing health literacy, decision-making support, and empowerment for BRCA mutation carriers. Through data-driven solutions and stakeholder engagement, CHOICE provides personalized tools and knowledge to both patients and healthcare professionals in cancer prevention and treatment.
