Femininity and the Space to Be Yourself

A Changing Relationship with Your Body

For many women carrying a BRCA mutation, the relationship with your body can shift in ways that are difficult to put into words. You may feel a complicated mix of emotions: gratitude for the knowledge you now have, grief over decisions you never expected to face, or uncertainty about how preventive care might change how you feel in your own skin. All of these feelings are valid, and none of them needs to be resolved quickly. Your sense of self is not located in any one part of your body, and it will not be undone by the choices you make to protect your health. But it is equally important to acknowledge that these choices carry real emotional weight, and that weight deserves to be taken seriously.

You Are More Than This Diagnosis

It can be easy to feel as though your diagnosis has become the only thing that defines you. But you are a whole person, with relationships, history, humour, and a life that extends far beyond any medical appointment. The CHOICE project is here to support not just your health decisions, but your sense of self throughout this process. You do not need to feel strong every day. You do not need to have it figured out. What you do deserve is space to be exactly where you are, and support that helps you move forward in a way that feels true to who you are.

Being Gentle with Yourself

You don’t have to have everything resolved today. There will be days when you feel steady and days when you feel overwhelmed, and both are a natural part of living with this kind of uncertainty. You are not defined by a mutation; you are defined by the life you are doing your best to protect and live fully. Let your decisions be guided by what feels right for you. Not by pressure, not by fear, but by a quiet trust in your own values and your own pace.
