Health literacy algorithm

The Health Literacy Algorithm

At the core of the CHOICE project is our Health Literacy Algorithm, a sophisticated “digital brain” designed to bridge the gap between complex medical data and human understanding. Developed by our experts at NOVA University Lisbon, this pioneering tool uses Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to analyze the landscape of breast cancer information across Europe. It doesn’t just read data; it understands the sentiment, the confusion, and the specific needs of women carrying BRCA mutations.

Turning Millions of Conversations into Clarity

Innovation happens at scale. Our algorithm is trained on over 5,000,000 online interactions from social media, health forums, and digital apps. By scanning this vast sea of information, the algorithm identifies:

  • Knowledge Gaps: Exactly where medical information becomes too complex or confusing.
  • Misconceptions: Common myths that might prevent a woman from seeking preventive care.
  • Emotional Sentiment: The underlying fears and anxieties that influence health decisions.

Actionable Insights via Open API

The true power of the CHOICE algorithm lies in its accessibility. We are exposing this technology through an open-source API, allowing national healthcare platforms, hospital websites, and health apps to integrate our intelligence into their own systems. This means that a healthcare provider can receive real-time feedback on how to adapt their communication, ensuring that every patient receives information that is culturally sensitive, easy to understand, and personally relevant. By classifying BRCA-related content into clear themes, such as prevention strategies, surgical options, and emotional support, the algorithm ensures that no woman is left to navigate her health journey with generic advice.
