• Cross-country patient barriers

CHOICE is running comparative research across Portugal, Czechia and Greece to understand what gets in the way of informed decision-making for BRCA carriers:

• 300 surveys (100 per country) with women who carry BRCA mutations.
• 60 in-depth qualitative interviews (20 per country) covering emotional impact, family planning, and experiences with healthcare.
• Analysis of over 5,000,000 online interactions from social media, health forums, and patient organisation platforms.

Some barriers are already well documented: misconceptions about breast cancer, emotional distress, fear of surgical complications, worries about how surgery might look, not enough personalised information, and low health literacy generally.

Detailed findings from each country will be published here as the research is completed, with first results expected in late 2026 and full analysis by early 2027.
